ANIP for Everyone
ANIP is a way to make AI agents safer and easier to govern when they take real actions.
It helps answer basic but important questions:
- What is the agent allowed to do?
- Who gave it permission?
- What might happen if it acts?
- Does the action cost money or create risk?
- Can the action be undone?
- What should happen if approval is missing?
- How can people check what happened afterward?
The goal is simple: if agents are going to operate software on behalf of people and organizations, their actions need rules, records, and clear boundaries.
Why ANIP exists
Many AI agents can already connect to tools and services. They can search data, create tickets, send messages, update systems, trigger deployments, and more.
That is useful, but it creates a problem. Traditional software interfaces were mostly designed for humans or predictable programs. They were not designed for agents that decide what to do dynamically.
A human can read a warning, understand a company policy, ask a manager for approval, or decide that an action feels risky. An agent needs that kind of information in a structured form it can understand before it acts.
ANIP provides that structure.
Why tool access is not enough
Many business systems were built with a user interface in the middle.
The API might expose simple actions such as "create ticket," "post message," or "update status." The product UI usually adds the missing workflow:
- which fields are required
- which action needs confirmation
- which status change is allowed
- which data this person can see
- which warning should appear before a risky action
- what to do when the action is blocked
When an AI agent bypasses the UI and only receives tools, that workflow does not automatically come with it.
Teams often compensate with prompts, skills, recipes, or agent workflows that tell the agent how to use the tools safely. Those can help, but they live on the agent side. They can be incomplete, outdated, misunderstood, or overridden.
ANIP puts the important rules back where they belong: on the service side, close to the action being taken.
That also makes agents easier and cheaper to operate. If the service clearly exposes safe, bounded capabilities, the agent does not need to infer as much hidden policy from long prompts or complicated recipes on every request.
A simple analogy
Imagine giving an assistant access to your company systems.
You would not want to say:
Here are the keys to everything. Use your judgment.
You would want to say:
- You can look up information.
- You can draft changes.
- You can spend up to a certain amount.
- You need approval before doing anything irreversible.
- You cannot access private records unless the task requires it.
- Every important action must be recorded.
ANIP is a way for software systems to express those rules to AI agents.
What ANIP adds
ANIP is not just another way for an agent to call a tool. It adds a governance layer around the action.
That means the system can describe:
- what actions are available
- what permissions are needed
- what the action might change
- whether the action can be undone
- what it might cost
- what approval is required
- what record will be kept
This lets the agent understand the difference between a harmless lookup and a serious action.
Example: booking a flight
Suppose an agent is helping plan a business trip.
Searching for flights is low risk. It only reads information.
Booking a flight is different. It spends money, reserves a seat, may create cancellation fees, and may require manager approval.
ANIP lets the travel service make that difference clear. The agent can see:
- searching flights is allowed
- booking a flight requires permission
- the delegated budget is $300
- the flight costs $380
- the action is hard to reverse
- a specific person can approve the higher budget
Instead of guessing or failing in a confusing way, the agent can stop and ask for approval.
Example: software deployment
Now imagine an engineering agent that helps manage software systems.
It might be allowed to:
- read logs
- run tests
- create a deployment plan
- restart a development service
But it might not be allowed to:
- deploy to production
- rotate secrets
- delete data
- change security settings
ANIP helps express those boundaries directly in the interface. The agent does not just see a list of buttons. It sees what each action means and what authority is required.
Example: Slack or Jira access
Giving an agent access to Slack or Jira through a broad tool interface can be risky. The agent may technically be able to search, create, update, transition, or post.
ANIP lets an organization expose safer behaviors instead:
- prepare a message before sending it
- require approval before posting to a channel
- draft a Jira issue before creating it
- block unsafe workflow transitions
- record who approved the action
The agent sees governed capabilities, not unrestricted access to every backend operation.
Why prompts alone are not enough
Teams can write prompts that say:
Do not spend more than $300.
Ask before deploying to production.
Do not post to customer channels.
That helps, but prompts are not enough for serious systems. They can be misunderstood, skipped, changed, or separated from the software enforcing the rule.
ANIP moves those rules closer to the action itself. The service can enforce them and return clear explanations when the agent is not allowed to proceed.
In other words, ANIP does not just ask the agent to behave well. It gives the system a way to define and enforce the boundaries.
Governance, trust, and lineage
ANIP is often described as a governance, trust, and lineage layer for agent actions.
Governance means the system knows what the agent is allowed to do and what approvals are needed.
Trust means the system can verify important claims, such as who delegated authority or which service declared a capability.
Lineage means actions can be traced. If an agent takes several steps across several systems, people should be able to understand where those actions came from and how they are connected.

Product teams benefit because they can offer agent-powered workflows without turning every integration into custom policy work.
Engineering teams benefit because permissions, side effects, errors, and audit records can be handled consistently instead of being rebuilt for every tool.

What ANIP is not
ANIP is not a magic safety guarantee. A badly designed system can still be unsafe.
ANIP is not only for one kind of AI model or one company.

ANIP is also not meant to make every tiny action complicated. Its value is strongest when agents perform actions that involve money, private data, approvals, irreversible changes, or multiple systems.
